Unlike Texas, Florida won't license you on the exam alone. The 2-15 license — health, life, and annuities including variable contracts — requires a 60-hour state-approved pre-licensing course, finished within four years of applying. Certain professional designations, a qualifying insurance degree, or a license already held in another state can substitute for the course or waive it; the Department of Financial Services' license page lists exactly which. If you take the course, your provider reports completion to the Department for you.1

The exam is 150 scored questions in 2 hours 45 minutes, covering general life, health and annuity knowledge alongside Florida statutes, rules and regulations. Fifteen unscored "pretest" questions are mixed in and are not marked, so treat every question as if it counts.2,3

Florida's pass mark is a plain 70%: the questions you got right divided by the total. If you don't pass, you book again and pay the $44 again, up to five attempts at the same exam in any 12-month period.2

To be licensed you must be at least 18 and a Florida resident, apply online through your MyProfile account with the Department ($50 application fee plus a $5 license ID fee), and be fingerprinted. A passing score is good for one year — finish licensing inside that year or you will retake the exam. The license also needs an appointment from an insurer before it is valid for selling.1,2
