How to get your Florida 2-15 life and health license
How to get Florida's 2-15 life and health license: who can apply, each step in order, every fee, and exam-day rules, sourced from DFS and Pearson VUE.

Who can apply
For the resident 2-15 license you must be at least 18 and a bona fide Florida resident. You must also be a U.S. citizen, or a legal alien with work authorization, and you can't hold a resident license in another state. Employees of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or of a state service office can't hold it.1
Every applicant is fingerprinted for a criminal-history check. IdentoGO sends the prints to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which sends the results to the Department of Financial Services (DFS).3
You need a prerequisite before you apply. For most people it is a 60-hour approved course, completed within 4 years of applying (some exemptions). You can instead combine a 30-hour life, annuity and variable contracts course (or a ChFC or FLMI) with a 40-hour health course (or one of several health designations). Three routes also skip the exam: an insurance degree with at least 9 credit hours of insurance, the CLU designation, or transferring an equivalent license. To transfer, you must have held that license for at least a year and apply within 90 days of becoming a Florida resident.1
Step by step
- Complete the prerequisite, usually the 60-hour course. Your course provider reports your completion to DFS within 21 days of your passing date. If you qualify through a designation instead, send DFS the proof yourself.1
- Apply online through your MyProfile account on the DFS website. The fees are $50 application + $5 license ID; fingerprinting paid separately to the vendor.1,2,5
- Get fingerprinted. Register and pay with IdentoGO, then have your prints taken at an IdentoGO LiveScan location. The fee is $49.50 plus county sales tax. If you don't already hold a Florida insurance license, the results are valid for one year.2,3
- Book and take the exam with Pearson VUE, at least one business day ahead. It has 150 scored, plus 15 unscored pretest questions, and you get 2 hours 45 minutes. The fee is $44, paid when you book. To change or cancel without losing the fee, do it online at least 48 hours before.5,6
- Watch your MyProfile account. DFS lists anything still missing under the pending license, and it emails you once every step is done. You don't qualify until DFS has your passing result from Pearson VUE, and a passing score is good for one year.1,5
- Print your license from MyProfile, then get appointed. The license isn't valid for selling until an insurer appoints you through DFS's eAppoint system.1,5
A note on the order. DFS's 2-15 page puts the exam after the application and mentions an exam authorization message in MyProfile. Pearson VUE's 2024 handbook says only bail bond candidates need that authorization, and that everyone else books the exam directly and applies after passing. Either way, DFS won't issue the license until it has the prerequisite, your fingerprints and a passing score less than a year old. If you're not sure which order applies to you, ask DFS at AgentLicensing@MyFloridaCFO.com before you book.1,5

Exam day
Bring one current government-issued photo ID with your signature, such as a driver's license, passport, state ID card, military ID or green card. It must be in English, and the name must exactly match your booking. An expired ID doesn't count, even inside a grace period. Without it you are turned away and lose the fee.5
The handbook describes testing in person at Pearson VUE test centers, including some on military bases. Arrive 30 minutes early to check in, where you are photographed for the score report.5
Nothing personal goes into the room. That includes phones, watches, wallets, bags, notes and your own pens; the test center gives you something to write on. You don't need a calculator, and you can't bring one, but staff will give you one if you ask. You may use one word-for-word translation dictionary once staff have checked it. You can take a break, but the clock keeps running.5
You leave with a score report marked pass or fail, showing your numeric score and diagnostic information. The pass mark is 70% of questions answered correctly. If you fail, you book again through Pearson VUE. Pay again each time; at most 5 attempts at the same exam in 12 months.5
Study the licensing rules the exam tests
After you're licensed
Every two years you need 24 hours of continuing education, due by the end of your birth month. Four of them are the Life, Health and Annuity law and ethics update (course 5-215), and the other 20 are electives. You can see your current requirement in MyProfile.1,4
Stay appointed. The license needs an appointment to be valid, and it expires if it goes 48 months without one. DFS's continuing education page has the current rules, so check it before your deadline.1,4
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a pre-licensing course to get a Florida life and health license?
Yes, unless you qualify another way. The standard route is a 60-hour approved course, completed within 4 years of applying (some exemptions). Some designations, an insurance degree or an equivalent license from another state can replace it; DFS's 2-15 page lists which.1
How much does it cost to get a Florida 2-15 license?
The exam is $44 per attempt. DFS charges $50 application + $5 license ID; fingerprinting paid separately to the vendor; IdentoGO's LiveScan fee is $49.50 plus county sales tax. The pre-licensing course is priced by its provider.1,2,3,5
How long is the Florida 2-15 exam?
You get 2 hours 45 minutes. The exam has 150 scored, plus 15 unscored pretest questions.6
How many times can I take the exam?
Pay again each time; at most 5 attempts at the same exam in 12 months. You re-register with Pearson VUE each time.5
How long is a passing score good for?
One year from the date you earned it. If you don't finish licensing within that year, you will have to pass the exam again.1,5
Can I get the 2-15 license without taking the exam?
In some cases. A qualifying insurance degree or the CLU designation skips the exam. So does transferring an equivalent resident license you held for at least a year, if you apply within 90 days of becoming a Florida resident.1
Can I sell insurance as soon as my license is issued?
Only once an insurer has appointed you through DFS's eAppoint system; the 2-15 license isn't valid without an appointment. A license that goes 48 months unappointed expires.1,5
