Post-licensing and continuing education

First renewal: post-licensing
Florida requires sales associates to complete 45 hours of approved post-licensing education before the first renewal following initial licensure; brokers complete 60 hours before their first broker renewal. Hours are 50 minutes and include the examination. The courses build practical skills on prelicensing knowledge. Inactive status does not remove this requirement.
Failure to complete required post-licensing makes the license null and void. A sales associate must requalify through the sales associate prelicensing course and state examination. A broker must complete the broker prelicensing course and examination to return as a broker. Alternatively, the former broker may obtain a sales associate license by providing proof of satisfactory completion of the 14-hour continuing education course within six months after the broker license expires.
Specific exceptions apply: a qualifying four-year or higher real estate degree exempts its holder from initial licensing education and post-licensing; individual physical hardship can support an additional six months for post-licensing. Ordinary scheduling problems are not a general grace period.
Later renewals: continuing education
Florida generally requires 14 hours per biennium: 3 hours Core Law, 3 hours Business Ethics, and at least 8 specialty hours. Ordinary continuing education does not substitute for first-renewal post-licensing. An otherwise qualified active Florida Bar member in good standing is exempt from the continuing education rule. The real estate degree exemption for post-licensing is not that continuing education exemption.
Missed renewal: distinguish the consequence
Ordinary failure to renew leads to involuntarily inactive status, unlike failure to complete required post-licensing. Reactivation education is at least 14 hours for involuntary inactivity of 12 months or less; it is 28 hours for more than 12 but fewer than 24 months. Involuntary inactivity cannot continue beyond the two-year limit. Education does not by itself renew or reactivate a license: application, fees, and other legal requirements also matter.
Identify the stage, license category, and any applicable exception before selecting the hours or consequence.
