Texas sells life and health under one General Lines license, and you earn it with one exam. It is two parts marked as a single score: 100 questions on general life and health insurance knowledge, and 30 on Texas law and rules — how agents are licensed, appointed and disciplined, and what the Texas Insurance Code requires of a policy. Fifteen more "pretest" questions are mixed in; they don't count, and nothing tells you which ones they are, so treat every question as if it does.2,3

The pass mark is a scaled score of 70. That is not 70% correct: Pearson VUE converts your raw score onto a 0–100 scale so that every version of the exam is held to the same standard, and a score below 70 tells you how close you came rather than how many you got right. If you don't pass, you can book again from the next day and there is no limit on attempts — each sitting is another $49.2

After the exam, the Texas Department of Insurance's route is: get fingerprinted with IdentoGO for a background check, then apply online through Sircon or NIPR with the $50 fee and your fingerprint receipt. Apply within a year of passing, or you will be sitting the exam again.1,2
